Naturally, there are plenty of extracurricular activities to engage in between and after classes along with some interesting side-stories like a missing history teacher and what’s up with that giant bear rampaging down halls and in the courtyard? The Academy is full of mystery and secrets and it’s up to you to uncover them all. Things get really interesting once you start attending actual classes with real subjects and simplified textbooks with chapters and reading assignments.
It seems just about any activity can be turned into a puzzle from unpacking a suitcase to mending a broken pencil. This would make a great family night experience as the mix of puzzles and tests versus adventure and exploration are fairly balanced. The sheer amount and eclectic array of puzzles are the main attraction to this charming game with brainteasers that will appeal to young and old of all knowledge levels. Once inside the main hall you’ll need to find your desk, watch a short introduction film, and take an admission exam – but I thought we were already accepted? No worries the exam is only a single question – two if you count the bonus question, and what appears to be some extreme math turns out to be clever logic and awareness puzzles instead. Apparently chocolate stimulates the brain and each bar will grant you 10 hints to help with solving future puzzles. You might want to chat with the old man by the door selling candy bars.
You begin the game with the receipt of your acceptance letter to The Academy and it’s just a short bus ride to the front steps to begin your orientation.

It also turns everyday life at a private school into a series of impromptu puzzle events. The Academy assembles more than 200 puzzles and riddles, presenting them as classroom learning exercises, pop-quizzes, exams, and even extra credit. If you’ve never heard of the show this might sound like an insult, but Idiotest is a very clever gameshow that tests contestants’ awareness and observation skills more than book and school smarts. This lead to several missed solutions that were even more frustrating because I knew what the answer was suppose to be from the start.The Academy: The First Riddle claims to be the inspiration child of Harry Potter meets Professor Layton, but after several hours of charming exploration and some truly mind-bending puzzles I’d be more inclined to compare this to Ben Gleib’s game show, Idiotest. Sometimes you’re suppose to cover the area with the whole thing, while other times you’re suppose to have just the point of it touching the top. The problem with this is that it’s not always clear how you’re suppose to position your marker according to their standards. My one issue is that sometimes when you come across a puzzle that requires you to place a marker on your answer, the game doesn’t always register your answer unless the marker is in the exact spot they had designed. The controls and framerate are both very smooth, as this isn’t the most technologically demanding game out there. Aside from the game’s main story puzzle objectives, there are plenty of other side quests you can find by simply talking to other people and keeping a keen eye out for other points of interest. This takes me back to the good old days of Minesweeper.Īs far as gameplay, you’ll control Sam through the Academy and often interact with other students and teachers. It’s refreshing to play a game that’s often times actually as intelligent as it thinks it is. Many of the puzzles will try to trick you with their wording or your brain might naturally want to make things seem more complex than they really are. Not only that, but they offer a fair amount of challenge and many of them will force you to think outside the box. I was pleasantly surprised to learn almost immediately that the puzzles featured in this game are widely varied. Story aside, The Academy: The First Riddle is really all about its puzzles. Then near the end of the first chapter, you come to realize that the school has many dark secrets that are waiting to be discovered. However, occasionally something bizarre happens and you learn that there’s more going on than meets the eye. At first the story feels almost shoehorned in, like they were trying to come up with a reason for Sam to continue doing puzzles. You arrive, do some puzzles, meet your awkward or bullying classmates, do some puzzles, get a layout of the grounds, and do some puzzles. I will warn you that the pacing in The Academy: The First Riddle does start off pretty slow.
